Phoebe Burrill Parkinson

Artist Statement

Phoebe Burrill Parkinson is a painter from West Yorkshire beginning to explore the theme of posthumanism, after previously being inspired by philosopher Walter Benjamin and his theory of aura. Phoebe's recent work explores the harmony and tension between the relationships humans have with nature and technology.

Phoebe's primary medium is gouache, chosen for its versatility and fast drying time. This medium enables spontaneity before Phoebe begins hand-painting meticulous geometric compositions. A process which has required patience, and has become a repetitive yet meditative practice. Working from a colour palette of twelve Phoebe blends colours to emulate natural light, the reflections and movement of water, and the digitalisation of our natural resources through controlled pixelation. Her practice balances intuitive colour application and the organic movement of gouache’s water colour property, with the methodical layering of opaque repeated shapes.

Phoebe’s practice poses the question whether technology estranges us from nature and our humanity.
